A framework for bringing your big vision to life

One of the things I hear from my clients + community over and over again is that they’re not sure how to take their dream and break it down into actionable, bitesize steps.

It usually plays out something like this:

⟑ They know they need to take consistent action if they want to bring their vision (usually a biz, income, and/or lifestyle goal) to life.

⟑ But, most of them are making the mistake of not taking the time up front to design an aligned roadmap, so the actions they’re taking all add up.

⟑ Instead, they DO work really hard, and they DO take action, but without a clear + aligned strategy, it’s just a bunch of left-and-right steps, instead of consistent steps forward.

Relate? Want a powerful framework for taking your big vision, and breaking it down into an actionable strategy to bring your vision to life?

I'm not the author of this framework, but I'm a dedicated practitioner. I use it personally, and use it with 100% of my clients, too. I learned the framework + process from my mentor and coach, Alyssa Nobriga, and it's been a game-changer. The full process is customized to each client/individual, but I want you to have a starting point, so below is an overview of the framework. It's a powerful starting place for creating goals + strategy that will actually move the needle for you, toward your big vision.

VISION –> GOAL –> MILESTONES

  • VISION best serves when it’s big, inspiring, and includes the genuine desires of your heart in all areas of life. Your vision is the general direction you want to move in life, the big picture of your life that you desire to create.
  • GOALS best serve when they’re small to medium, and about 85% attainable (this is what current research says). If you think of your vision as the general direction you’re moving, goals are the specific targets you’re moving toward all along the way, as you move in the direction of your vison.
  • MILESTONES are the landmarks you hit along the way to achieving your goal, that tell you you’re showing up and taking the right actions to reach your goal. They are mini-targets, or check-in points, on the way to your overarching goal that tell you if you’re on track. They can be results based (I’ve lost 10lbs by month two) or action based (I’ve done 20 workouts by month two).

STEP 1

Casting vision is the incredibly important first step in creating the life you crave. Until you have an inspiring vision, you can’t create goals and milestones that will take you where you want to go. Start with vision!

STEP 2

Set your goal. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Work with ONE goal at a time, every 90 days. That means committing to focus on one specific outcome for 90 days, and not changing targets until then.
  • Make your goal clear and specific. How much, by when. Not a general idea, a clear target. Numbers help; Make it measurable.
  • You need to be able to answer, “Did it hit my goal?” with YES or NO.
  • Create accountability to someone besides yourself. Ideally that person will be your coach, but if you're going solo, consider checking in with a trusted, supportive friend, partner, or community every week or two. Accountability is really powerful.
  • Your goal should feel about 85% attainable to you. If it feels less than 85% attainable, you run the risk of your subconscious rejecting it and sabotaging your efforts. Much more than 85% attainable and it may not feel like the juice is worth the squeeze, ya know? It needs to feel exciting, but not overwhelming or impossible.

STEP 3

Step three is creating milestones. Milestones are like signposts on your way to your overarching goal, that let you know if you’re on target. You’ll arrange your milestones, or check-ins, at pre-determined spots along the way. As mentioned above, these can be action-based, or results-based. Here’s an example of what milestones might look like:

90-day goal: Lose 12lbs

Milestones (results-based): Week 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 - weigh-in to see if I’ve lost X-lbs (2lbs by week 2, 4lbs by week 4, etc)
OR
Milestones (action-based): Week 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 – check-in to see if I’ve completed X # of workouts and how many days I followed my nutrition plan at 80% or better

Milestones let you know if you’re on track or not, and if you’re showing up or not. They provide you with data to upgrade your approach if it’s not working, or double-down on what is working.

Know better, do better

I used to preach that it was important to have really big goals. I thought big goals = big results. I also thought you should be working toward multiple goals at once. I’ve since invested a lot in my education on these topics, and, well, when you know better, you do better, right? You know what works best for you, but if what you've been doing isn't working, maybe it's time to experiment with something new. If I’d never been willing to learn, grow, and try something new, I never would have found a more effective path (specifically, this path/process).

Commit to trying something new

Testing out a new approach takes time, and commitment to the new path. No approach will be effective if you’re bobbing and weaving all over the place, mixing in a little of this and a little of that after one week. Give it 90 days. Head down, not making tweaks, walking it out for a least 90 days. Then decide.
