The #1 Concept You Must Embrace as a Working Mom: Systems for Success
If you want BOTH -- career + family -- SYSTEMS are your bestie bestest best friend. Systems for ehhhh-vaaaa-reeee-THING that you want to happen day-in and day-out. You simply can’t hustle hard enough to get it all done without SYSTEMS. If you want to make sure it gets done, day after day, curveball after curveball, you gotta put a system on it!
You have way too many balls in the air to expect to, “make time tonight,” or “figure it out in the morning.” You have about 10,001 OTHER things to make time for and figure out, and girl, HOPE isn’t a strategy!
I go from one system to the next, as I make my way though my days. Most of the time I’m flying solo, since my husband is a career-traveler. I’ve got 2 babies, 2 dogs, 3 businesses, and a household to keep up and keep tabs on. Ain’t no freaking WAY I could accomplish everything I want to get done each day by winging it. Ain’t. NO. Way!
Here’s a sampling of my daily systems that allow me to show up where and how I want, as the kind of career woman AND the kind of family woman I want to be:
- meal board – because I like eating a real dinner every night, and I want my family to eat something besides chicken nuggets once in awhile
- morning routine – because I like starting my days freaking PUMPED to achieve my big goals!
- calendars / scheduling – because I like maximizing every minute of my day, and knowing what major tasks I need to accomplish to make the day a win and move me closer to achieving my big goals. Plus, I REALLY like having time to do the things I WANT to do (like take a long shower, write, visualize, walk my dogs, listen to my podcasts and/or audio books, etc.)
- chore chart – because I like keeping up on chores without working too hard or thinking too much about it. Like seriously, who wants to spend a whole day doing house work? Not this girl.
- Hatch lights, plus bedtime and wake up routines – because I LOVE sleeping, and I need my kids to sleep if I want to sleep!
- time blocking for work, plus leveraging child care – because I love my career, and I like making money
- time blocking for play, plus leveraging household tasks – because I like going on dates with my husband, playing with my babies, and living in a clean, comfortable home. That has groceries in it.
Systemizing isn’t always easy, and it does take effort on the front end. BUT it IS always worth it, and I can’t overstate the benefits for a working / career mom. It’s a cruise control button. It’s an auto pilot button.
Systems allow you to get MORE done, with LESS effort. And isn’t that the key?
You want a great career. You want to be a great mom. You want BOTH. And to have both, you’ve got to show up with purpose every dang day. To show up consistently, you’ve GOT to have SYSTEMS to SUPPORT you!
