Creating a Powerful Morning Routine: How Career Moms Can Start Their Day with Focus and Energy

Having a powerful morning routine is maybe THE best way to manage and make peace with the chaos of the career mom lifestyle. It allows you to build momentum toward creating your best life, every single day, no matter what comes up.

What's a morning routine, though? It's a habit of reviewing the goals you want to achieve and the women you want to become first thing in the morning. It sets your intentions for your day, and creates positive energy and laser-like focus.

There is a drastic difference in the tone and energy (ergo, results) of your day when you begin it by feeling slightly overwhelmed and serving others the moment your feet hit the floor, VS. taking time to get centered before anyone is tugging at your jammies.

Creating a morning routine can absolutely change your life and it doesn’t have to be complicated! Here are a few simple tips to help you create a morning routine:

  1. Get to bed on time – if you haven’t slept, it’s going to feel TOO hard to get up earlier
  2. Get up when your alarm goes off – you’ve simply got to do it. I KNOW it’s not easy, I know you’d rather sleep, I know, I know, I know. I AM a career mom, too, remember? But you can have your excuses or you can have the results and life you want, your choice. It really is that simple, friend. When you set an alarm, get up when it dings. The end.
  3. Get out of bed – this sounds obvious, but maybe you’re thinking, I’ll just grab coffee and sit in bed to do my morning routine. Nope! What is your bed for? Sleeping! Get out of it, it’s time to get pumped up to have an amazing day!
  4. Have your routine written out – like, a physical piece of paper with words on it. What steps will you take in your morning routine? (see below for ideas) Will you review your goals? Will you recite some affirmation? Will you think about 3 things you're grateful for?

There will be lots of days when you’re tired, groggy, or unmotivated, and a written set of action steps is the difference between doing it, or not.
  5. Here are some ideas of what you may want to include in your morning routine:
    -What am I grateful for?
-In the last 24 hours, what went where? Where was I my best self?
-In the last 24 hours, what didn’t go well? What opportunities did I create to do better today?
-Who/what do I want to pray for today?
-What are my top 3, 5 or 10 goals?
-Calendar review – what will I be doing today, and what must I get done?
-Setting intentions: where must I show up at my best today, and what will that look like? AKA – visualize kicking ass in your day! Example: I have an important meeting at 11am, and I show up totally prepared, feeling confident, and looking sharp. I deliver my points seamlessly, and with it is well received. It ends in a favorable result!
  6. Bring your journal – ANY of the above is most powerful if the answers are written, but they don’t have to be. If you don’t write anything else, I do recommend physically writing out your goals and a few things you're grateful for. If you want to schedule time for it, do a little free writing, or intention setting.

Bottom line: anything you write out is going to build powerful momentum and energy around it!
  7. You may also want to bring a book – reading something inspirational or motivational for even 10 minutes is a SUPER powerful way to start your day!
  8. Plan on at least 15 minutes of uninterrupted time.
