We Limit Ourselves: How to Break Through Your Internal Ceiling and Achieve More
We tend to set floors and ceilings, internal limits on what we can BE, DO and HAVE. Those limits definitely apply to how much we can earn. If you want to create more freedom (financial freedom, time freedom, lifestyle freedom, etc. etc.) but feel like you're super stuck, like you just can't move on to your next level, this may be why.
Whether we realize it or not (usually not), we have an internal set point – a range – that we tend to keep ourselves within. We create our range through pain and pleasure.
If pain is the primary motivator, we scramble when our results dip below a minimum standard we’ve set for ourselves. Examples: when our wallet gets to thin or we get to heavy. We do everything we must to get out of pain, and back up to our standard, as soon as possible.
When pleasure (desire) is the driver, we do everything we can to push our results to a certain desire, to get something we really, really want. Example: earning more $$ for a vacay, or having a hot girl summer.
Recognize any of those patterns?
There’s a catch, though – you can’t create or achieve more than you believe you’re capable and worthy of. If you want to change your standard (your range) for good, and avoid yo-yo results, you’ve got to change where your pain point kicks in (to set the low end of your range), and what you believe you’re capable and worthy of being/doing/having (to set the high end of your range).
The good news is that first one (pain) often takes care of itself. Remember your first car, home, budget hotel room, or economy flight? Remember when you upgraded? It’d be tough to go back, huh? The pain point (the floor, the bottom end of your range) moves automatically as you experience more and more of what you desire.
Your work, then, is to change the ceiling (the top end of your range), which is set by what you believe you’re capable and worthy of being, doing and having. Not sure where to begin? Check out this post. Spend some time poking around the blog, there are several posts that will serve you, if this is where you feel stuck / need support.
